‘Otis’ is unbelievably dumb

First of all, you’ve got Otis Redding singing one of his most famous songs as a sample. Why? Naturally, he’s going to overshadow any thing else going on in the song and that is precisely what Otis Redding, though he is long dead, does.

Second, the production of this song is soooo bad. There are moments when it just sounds cacophonous and nothing else.

Third, you’ve got Kanye West and Jay-Z at their most solipsistic ever. Kanye’s arrogance is usually funny more than anything else. But here it’s just insufferable. If you’re going to brag about how great you are, at least do it over a sick beat and with rapid flow. Otherwise, you look like a bunch of posturing teenagers.

And finally, Kanye West and Jay-Z!! This is supposed to be epic! Watch the throne? I think I’ll watch something else.

UPDATE: Do you see Anziz Ansari looking hella uncomfortable in the background? and unfortunately, I keep listening to this song despite myself…

  1. You hit the nail right on the head, because they do come off as posturing teenagers. What happened to hip-hop? This was a well written article and I couldn’t agree with you more.
